B-CC IS CHARTER MEMBER OF PROJECT PERICLES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – Bethune-Cookman College has been selected as one of ten charter institutions of Project Pericles, a program to create civic leadership and involvement on its member campuses.

Founded in 1999 by   New York businessman Eugene M. Lang, Project Pericles encourages and facilitates commitments by colleges and universities to include education for social responsibility and participatory citizenship as an essential part of their educational programs.

Student participants will receive a foundation for social and civic involvement and a conviction that democratic institutions and processes offer each person the best opportunity to improve the condition of society, according to Dr. Claudette McFadden, who is overseeing B-CC’s participation in the project.

“This gets students involved on a very deep level beyond volunteerism and student learning,’’ McFadden said. “Students will get to look at issues on the policy level. If we’re involved in teaching children to read, then we also look at the issues that create the need.’’

“Project Pericles is about stimulating civic engagement,” McFadden added. “If civic engagement is not enhanced, future generations will not have the civic commitment necessary for sustaining democracy.”

The other pilot institutions include Alleghany College, Elon, Hampshire, Macalester College, New England College, Pace University, Pitzer College, Swarthmore College and Ursinus. Bethune-Cookman College is the lone Historically Black College involved in the project, named for the Greek philosopher who brought democracy to the city-state of Athens.

Bethune-Cookman is a comprehensive college, which offers degrees in liberal arts as well as professional fields, such as business, education and nursing. A United Methodist Church-affiliated school, the college has a diverse and international student population of more than 2,500 and a solid reputation for academic excellence. As evidence of its outstanding program, the College has been listed in the Templeton Honor Roll of Character Building Colleges and Universities, and it was ranked by Black Enterprise magazine as one of the “Top 50” schools in the nation for black students.
