BETHUNE-COOKMAN COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH PURDUE UNIVERSITY’S  SCHOOLS OF ENGINEERING

DAYTONA BEACH, FL –  Two Bethune-Cookman College (B-CC)  pre-engineering students are currently working on their undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University in a 3 + 2 cooperative agreement between Purdue University and Bethune-Cookman College. This marks the beginning of a partnership of this type between the two institutions.

Dr. Theodore Nicholson, Sr., B-CC's Dean of Science and Mathematics, Dr. Mark Smith of the Purdue University School of Electronics and Computer Engineering, and B-CC President Dr. Oswald P. Bronson Sr. pose for a photo during Dr. Smith's recent visit to the B-CC campus.

Chad Baker (Jacksonville, Florida) and Roland Pettway (Detroit, Michigan) received full scholarships for their final two years of study in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University.

Under the 3 + 2 agreement, Bethune-Cookman College’s pre-engineering students can transfer to Purdue after three years of study at B-CC  and complete their studies in an engineering field of their choice.

“There is a lot of potential beyond the 3 + 2 program,’’ said Dr. Morrison Obeng, B-CC Assistant Professor for Computer Science and Engineering. “Our students will have the exposure to the facilities of a major university.”

The two institutions will conduct faculty exchanges as well as share in research opportunities. B-CC students will be eligible for internships at Purdue University. Also, Purdue University’s  School of Electrical and Computer Engineering will play a role in the development of the newly formed Computer Engineering program at B-CC.

Dr. Theodore Nicholson, Sr., Dean of the Division of Science and Mathematics at B-CC and Dr. Mark Smith, Head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University both state that  “It is a win-win partnership.”

Bethune-Cookman is a comprehensive college, which offers degrees in liberal arts as well as professional fields, such as business, education and nursing. A United Methodist Church-affiliated school, the college has a diverse and international student population of more than 2,500 and a solid reputation for academic excellence.

As evidence of its outstanding program, the College has been listed in the Templeton Honor Roll of Character Building Colleges and Universities, and it was ranked by Black Enterprise magazine as one of the “Top 50” schools in the nation for black students.
