SOCIOLOGY HONOR SOCIETY
CHARTERS B-CC CHAPTER
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Eight Bethune-Cookman
College sociology majors and one faculty member recently became
charter members of the Mu Chapter of Florida of Alpha Kappa Delta,
an international sociology honor society.

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is a premiere honor
society in sociology that focuses on stimulating scholarship and
promoting the scientific study of society. It has over 80,000
scholars in more than 490 chapters nationally and internationally,
including 23 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and 11
Florida colleges and universities.
B-CC’s chapter of AKD is the first at a
Florida HBCU. Inductees include:

The chapter advisor is Dr. Janice Allen-Kelsey.
Dr. Allen-Kelsey and Dr. John Ukawuilulu are AKD members previously
inducted at the University of Florida and Howard University,
respectively. Both are faculty in the School of Social Sciences and
the Department of Sociology and Gerontology.

Bethune-Cookman
is a comprehensive college, which offers degrees in liberal arts as
well as professional fields, such as business, education and
nursing. A United Methodist Church-affiliated school, the College
has a diverse and international student population of more than
2,700 and a solid reputation for academic excellence and community
service. As evidence of its outstanding program, the College has
been listed in the Templeton Honor Roll of Character Building
Colleges and Universities, and it was ranked by Black Enterprise
magazine as one of the “Top 50” schools in the nation for
black students. B-CC is one of 10 charter member colleges of
Project Pericles, a program to create civic leadership and
involvement on its member campuses. The College will celebrate
its 100th year of founding on October 4, 2004.
