B-CC STUDENT BOUND FOR RWANDA FOR SUMMER
INTERNSHIP
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman
College junior Jared Yancey has received an appointment to serve at
the United States Embassy in Kigali, Rwanda as part of a summer
internship sponsored by the U.S. State Department.
Yancey will spend two months in the African
nation’s capital in an administrative capacity at the embassy.
It’ll be the first time that Yancey, an International Studies
major from Portsmouth, Va., has left the country, but as an
International Studies major, he is looking forward to the
experience.
“I’m not exactly sure what to expect, but
I’m ready,’’ said Yancey.
“Ever since September 11th, I’ve
realized that you can’t just think on a domestic level,’’
Yancey added. “You have to see issues from a global perspective,
which goes along with the motto of International Studies majors –
`Think globally and act locally.’ ’’
Yancey is one of the first students in the
nation to be named a Charles B. Rangel Fellow by the Ralph Bunche
International Affairs Center in Washington, D.C. Named for the U.S.
Congressman from New York, the scholarship was created to encourage
minority students to pursue degrees and careers in international
affairs and diplomacy.
“We are thrilled that Jared will get the
opportunity to work abroad in an American embassy,’’ said Cheryl
Long, head of B-CC’s International Studies department. “We know
that he will represent himself, Bethune-Cookman and the United
States in a positive light. Our thoughts will be with him as he
travels so far from home.”
Yancey currently maintains a 3.8 GPA. He serves
as secretary general for B-CC’s model United Nations and is active
in the Student Government Association.
