YANCEY ELECTED B-CC SGA PRESIDENT

BEACH, Fla. -- The Bethune-Cookman College student body
has elected Jared
Yancey as the 2004-05 Student Government Association (SGA)
President.

Yancey,
20, is an International Studies major from Portsmouth, Virginia. He
is also involved in other organizations that have served as a
springboard for the start of his political career, including the
Model United Nations, Religious Life Fellowship, General Education
Council, and the Political Action Task Force.
As
SGA president-elect, Yancey says that he is excited to incorporate
more student involvement and participation in activities that the
SGA plan. His slogan for students who ask him what he plans to do as
the newest SGA president is ``What do you want me to Do?’’ He
wants students to put their requests on paper to show how serious
they are about having a successful school year.
Yancey
recently received an appointment to serve at the United States
Embassy in Kigali, Rwanda as part of a summer internship sponsored
by the U.S. State Department. He
will spend two months in the African nation’s capital in an
administrative capacity at the embassy.
Yancey
is honored to be the first male SGA president since Christie Knowles
served during the 2000-2001 school year.
“I
think it’s important to be a role model for other young males who
come into this prestigious institution,” Yancey said.
Despite
his busy schedule, the twin brother enjoys bowling, movies, and
spending time with friends.

Bethune-Cookman
is a comprehensive college, which offers degrees in liberal arts as
well as professional fields, such as business, education and
nursing. A United Methodist Church-affiliated school, the College
has a diverse and international student population of more than
2,700 and a solid reputation for academic excellence and community
service. As evidence of its outstanding program, the College has
been listed in the Templeton Honor Roll of Character Building
Colleges and Universities, and it was ranked by Black Enterprise
magazine as one of the “Top 50” schools in the nation for
black students. B-CC is one of 10 charter member colleges of
Project Pericles, a program to create civic leadership and
involvement on its member campuses. The College will celebrate
its 100th year of founding on October 4, 2004.
