B-CC PROFESSOR RECEIVES FREEMAN FELLOWSHIP

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -Dr. Dee Douglas-Jones, Assistant Professor of English and Reading in the Division of General Studies, has received a Freeman Fellowship to participate in the Summer Seminar in Hawaii and Malaysia for faculty at minority serving institutions. The fellowship is administered by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii and supported by the Freeman Foundation and the United States Department of Education.

The month-long program will feature an orientation at the University of Hawaii, an introduction to Malaysia's history, economy, and geography, and a tour of Singapore.

A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and a People to People Programs Ambassador, Dr. Douglas-Jones most recently visited Costa Rica as a member of the Literacy and Reading Education Delegation to Central America. Participation in the Asian program will allow her to extend her graduate work in Multicultural Education and doctoral field experiences in Ethnic Literatures and Cultures.

“I advise everyone to learn more about diverse cultures to understand who we are individually and collectively; reading multicultural literature is a good starting point,” Dr. Douglas-Jones says.
