DAYTONA BEACH,  Fla. – Bethune-Cookman College President Dr. Oswald P. Bronson was honored by Onyx magazine at the 2nd annual Onyx Awards Saturday, April 17 at the Omni Rosen Hotel in Orlando, Fla.

Bethune-Cookman College President Dr. Oswald P. Bronson Sr., with his wife, Helen Williams Bronson at his side, receives Onyx Magazine's special recognition for his years of service. Presenting him the award are Richard Black, representing Onyx Magazine and the Bethune Visionary Committee and Myrtle Brown, President of the B-CC Alumni Association.

Nominated along with Dr. Barbara Darby, President of the North Campus of Florida Community College in Jacksonville; James Wilson, retired music teacher at Orlando’s Jones High School; and Dr. Patrick Coggins, former President of Stetson University’s School of Education, Dr. Bronson received the Onyx Award for Education. Later in the program, Dr. Bronson received special recognition for his 29 years of service to Bethune-Cookman and to Higher Education.

“Dr. Bronson’s leadership and achievements at Bethune-Cookman College have become a benchmark in higher education,’’ said Onyx Magazine publisher Lillian Seays. “His belief in community service is evident in his numerous outside activities and his list of honors is a litany of his accomplishments.”

Slated to retire in June, Dr. Bronson has recently been named the Volusia County Person of the Year by the March of Dimes and received the J. Saxon Lloyd award from the Daytona Beach Civic League. He was honored by the Daytona Beach/Halifax Area Chamber of Commerce with its “Enterprise” award on behalf of the College’s contribution to the area.
