ONYX MAGAZINE HONORS DR.
BRONSON
DAYTONA BEACH,
Fla. – Bethune-Cookman College President Dr. Oswald P.
Bronson was honored by Onyx magazine at the 2nd annual
Onyx Awards Saturday, April 17 at the Omni Rosen Hotel in Orlando,
Fla.

recognition for his years of service. Presenting him the award

Nominated along with Dr. Barbara Darby,
President of the North Campus of Florida Community College in
Jacksonville; James Wilson, retired music teacher at Orlando’s
Jones High School; and Dr. Patrick Coggins, former President of
Stetson University’s School of Education, Dr. Bronson received the
Onyx Award for Education. Later in the program, Dr. Bronson received
special recognition for his 29 years of service to Bethune-Cookman
and to Higher Education.
“Dr. Bronson’s leadership and achievements
at Bethune-Cookman College have become a benchmark in higher
education,’’ said Onyx Magazine publisher Lillian Seays. “His
belief in community service is evident in his numerous outside
activities and his list of honors is a litany of his
accomplishments.”
Slated to retire in June, Dr. Bronson has
recently been named the Volusia County Person of the Year by the
March of Dimes and received the J. Saxon Lloyd award from the
Daytona Beach Civic League. He was honored by the Daytona
Beach/Halifax Area Chamber of Commerce with its “Enterprise”
award on behalf of the College’s contribution to the area.
The Onyx Award is presented each year to
African-American individuals in 12 different categories for their
accomplishments, and community involvement in their chosen career
path. The nominees have assumed a leadership role in his/her
professional role, and/or education, health and community services
to improve and expand African-Americans in a positive way throughout
the state of Florida.

Bethune-Cookman
is a comprehensive college, which offers degrees in liberal arts as
well as professional fields, such as business, education and
nursing. A United Methodist Church-affiliated school, the College
has a diverse and international student population of more than
2,700 and a solid reputation for academic excellence and community
service. As evidence of its outstanding program, the College has
been listed in the Templeton Honor Roll of Character Building
Colleges and Universities, and it was ranked by Black Enterprise
magazine as one of the “Top 50” schools in the nation for
black students. B-CC is one of 10 charter member colleges of
Project Pericles, a program to create civic leadership and
involvement on its member campuses. The College will celebrate
its 100th year of founding on October 4, 2004.
