SPRING CONCERT TO FEATURE EXPANDED PLAYBILL

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.  – Hosting the first Spring Concert in the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center is providing the Bethune-Cookman College Music Department the chance to showcase more talent.

In addition to the world renowned Concert Chorale and the Symphonic Band, B-CC’s Opera Workshop and Jazz Combo have been added to the bill of the annual concert, scheduled for Sunday, April 25th at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center located at 698 West International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach.

Having a state-of-the-art facility on campus allowed concert planners more leeway in developing the schedule, according to Dr. Hiram Powell, head of the B-CC Music Department.

“It’s a simple matter of logistics,’’ Powell said. “We can move our talented performers in and out much more efficiently with the additional backstage space. As a department, we’re very excited about presenting the Opera Workshop and Jazz Combo along with two of our cornerstone ensembles.’’

The annual concert is B-CC’s way of showing its appreciation to the Daytona Beach area for its support. It is sponsored by the Board of Counselors, a collection of local business and civic leaders who serve as ambassadors of the College in the community.

B-CC’s Concert Chorale, under the leadership of Dr. Rebecca W. Steele, has traveled more than a half million miles throughout the United States and five foreign countries. The Symphonic Band, conducted by Donovan Wells, performs at a variety of functions and programs throughout the year that highlight their advanced study and performance of standard and contemporary band literature.

Admission is free and the public is invited. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
